The Five-Star Match Who Wanted to Talk About Crypto for Two Hours
A flawless profile, a gorgeous photo, and one extremely long monologue about wallets.

On paper, he was a five-star situation. Great photos, a profile that mentioned both cooking and a love of old maps, and a voice message that sounded like a podcast host who actually cared. I put on the good jacket. I rehearsed three anecdotes in the mirror. I walked into that bar with the confidence of someone who has never once been proven wrong, which is to say, someone about to be proven wrong.
Forty minutes in, he said the word 'blockchain' with the tenderness most people reserve for pets. By the second hour I knew more about his portfolio than about his favorite color. I nodded in all the right places. I made the little 'mm' sound. I mentally drafted this column on a napkin, which he took as note-taking and responded by explaining a chart.
Here's the part where the app gets a modest pass: it did exactly what it promised. It matched us on shared interests and a reasonably close distance, and it never claimed he'd be a good listener. The failure was mine for assuming a five-star match meant a two-way conversation. Matching is not chemistry. A tidy profile is a trailer, not the movie.

Later that night I told Nina about it on TheFriend, mostly to vent. She did what a good fictional confidante does: she asked what I'd have wanted him to say instead, which is a question no app has ever asked me. I said I'd have liked one curious question about my day. She teased me about holding out for the bare minimum, then admitted the bare minimum is rarer than it should be.
I do not think crypto-man is a villain. He was nervous, and nervous people reach for the subject they're good at. I've done the same with my own hobby horses, and I'm not naming them because some of them are embarrassing. The difference is that I eventually asked him a question. He answered it in four words and went back to the chart.
Verdict: the app can introduce you to a very good conversation topic, but only a person who actually listens can make it a conversation.
